It was an honor and a joy to shoot Elements Dance Center’s individual and group portraits this weekend. I am still working my way through images, but wanted to go ahead and share some. If you need dance, sports, school, head shots, wedding, high school senior, family, maternity, or most any other kind of photography – including on-location, in my studio, in natural light, or with artificial light, I can help you out. Please contact me with your needs and I will be happy to meet for coffee or work up terms or a quote for the work. As always, thank you for your interest in Roots and Twigs Photography!
I had the honor and pleasure of photographing Contemporary Dance Academy’s performance and warm-up classes for their ballet performance of Clara and The Nutcracker, both at The Lincoln Center, here in Fort Collins, Colorado, in December 2017. It will take a while to go through the performance photos, but I wanted to share two early favorites, with many more to come!
This beautiful young lady’s mother and I have had a casual, running conversation about doing a session of her for a number of months now. Between school, spelling bee competitions, roller skating around the East Coast, and a busy DC life, in general, on her end, and a packed fall and winter schedule on mine, we just hadn’t pulled it off. Then we got a beautiful snow day yesterday and I suggested we do it. We shot these in my yard, as I took a break from clearing snow from the sidewalk and as my kids sledded down the bank in front of my house! But you’d never know it, right? I have known this young lady for almost 10 years, and it was my pleasure to take these, her first professional photos. I sincerely hope her family enjoys them for many years to come!
Here’s another High School Senior Mini Session I shot in Western NC in July. This Senior is involved in color guard and band, playing clarinet. I really loved this old, abandoned farm as a location.

And here are best friends, after we wrapped up the individual shots:
As many of you know, I mostly took the summer off and took a looong (really long!) trip with my kids. I spent almost all of the time in Western North Carolina, in and around Asheville. Since I had no other adult help and it rained a lot, I wasn’t able to do much shooting, but I am going to share a few photos in the coming days. First up: a mini session for a new high school senior! MB’s mom and I have been friends for 25 years, since our days in high school together. Yes, TWENTY-FIVE years. My friend has a high school senior and I have a toddler!!! Anyway… This session was actually in conjunction with one for MB’s best friend, and since we got a late start, we ran well past sunset. That made light a bit challenging, but it also gave us some nice color in the sky on a few shots. MB knew about an abandoned farm property near her home. We parked our cars on the dirt road closest to dilapidated buildings and tromped through the field, with grass and weeds as tall as us. Thankfully, we found no snakes! The longer we were there, the more interesting spots we found to shoot. All total, we shot for just over an hour and came away very satisfied. I am sharing client selections here, but I may add a few of my favorites later, too. MB is enthusiastic about band and plays both the clarinet and bassoon, both featured in her session.

I recently traveled to fabulous Asheville, NC for a family session, but I needed child care. The clients brought this lovely young lady and her mother along to help me out. In exchange for child care while I shot the other session, I provided her with a quick high school senior session of her own. My kids LOVED her and her mom, and I know why. They were both wonderful to work with and we got some lovely shots in the short time we had to work. The light was nice, her smile was bright, and her attitude was perfect. I think it was a win all around. Thank you so much, L and S. And, of course, huge thanks to the B family for connecting us!!!
Please send more fabulous seniors and prom-goers my way! So without further ado… Here is the lovely Miss L!
April is heavily booked and personal travel has made things just a bit busier. I’ve uploaded a number of proofs from recent sessions on Facebook, but I’m also posting many here in a quick slideshow until I get more time for final edits and proper posts. Hope you enjoy and please get in touch to schedule your own session!
